Line work was checked with translucent paper proof plots anchored to the source photos with 1000 meter tics. The linework was brought together from ORTHO64 tiles into a statewide coverage and statewide checkplots were produced. The linework was visually checked against a statewide Agency of Transportation "Vermont Railroads" map (published February 1989). The Springfield Terminal Railroad (Springfield VT) was not digitized since it is inactive (up for abandonment) as of Dec 1992, and is not clearly visible on current orthophotos. Updates - In 2002 VTrans added the following additional attributes (RRFLNAME,STATE_OWNED,RAILTRL,VRLID). VCGI populated the VRLID field based on information provided by VTrans. In 2003 VCGI used the VRLID coding and VRLTABLE to generate VRL routes. VCGI also checked existing centerlines against 1990's vintage 5K VT digital orthophotos. Centerlines not within 5 meters of the orthophoto location (if visible) were moved. Original release - The railroads data layer includes all railroads appearing on a VT Agency of Transportation Vermont Railroads map, with railroad locations determined from 1:5000 orthophotos. In addition to the official active railroads on the VTrans map, some other sections of track were digitized (notably near Rutland, a section of the Delaware & Hudson railroad near the New York border, and near St. Albans (see the RRACTIVE activity attribute). It is possible that some raillines and spurs may be missing if they were not visible on the orthophotos. Updates - In 2002 VTrans verified the RRACTIVE attribute values. Line accuracy standards were set as being within the confines of the visible railroad line as could be determined from 5K orthophotos. Most railroad centerlines are expected to fall within about 5 meters of their true ground locations (except in cases where orthophotos do not meet national map accuracy standards).
